Implementation of The Qurban Worship

This year’s Eid al-Adha 1444 H, God willing, will coincide on Wednesday Kliwon, June 28, 2023 based on the reckoning method in determining the start of the month of Qomariah. There is still about a month left for Muslims who intend to sacrifice or the sacrificial committee to select and buy sacrificial animals as well as prepare facilities and infrastructure for the management and implementation of the qurban worship that is thayyiban and makes the sacrificial animals prosperous.

The implementation of the sacrificial service should pay attention to the welfare aspects of slaughtered animals, as recommended by Rasulullah SAW, as follows:

“Indeed, Allah sets ihsan (doing good) in everything. So if you kill, you should do ihsan in killing, and if you slaughter, then you should do ihsan in slaughtering. (That is) let one of you sharpen his knife in order to lighten the animal he is slaughtering.» (H.R. Muslim).

Treating sacrificial animals properly during the sacrificial service will protect the workers/committees of the sacrifice. In addition, it will also facilitate the process of carrying out the sacrificial service. Doing ihsan to animals before slaughter is a form of carrying out the sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad and in accordance with animal welfare rules. In principle, animal welfare is also for human welfare. In the ritual of slaughtering sacrificial animals, there are at least 3 process points that need to be considered by the sacrificer and the sacrificial committee so that the sacrificial animal is prosperous and the sacrificial worship becomes thayyiban, safe, correct and comfortable, namely (1) the process of accepting the sacrificial animal by the sacrificial committee, (2 ) the process of storing sacrificial animals, and (3) the process of slaughtering sacrificial animals.

First, in the process of accepting sacrificial animals by the sacrificial committee, it must ensure that there are locations and unloading ramps that are safe for the sacrificial animals. This tool can be made from simple materials such as stacked sandbags.

Second, the process of sheltering sacrificial animals. The herding of sacrificial animals to holding pens and to the slaughtering site must be done carefully and not hurting the animals and not involving many people, perhaps a few congregations or a sacrificial committee are sufficient who happen to be cattle/goat breeders or are used to taking care of cattle/goats. The herding of the sacrificial animal must also be kept away from small children or those who are not interested. This is because animals that are afraid and stressed can be dangerous. Sacrificial animals are fasted for food for a maximum of 12 hours before being slaughtered but must still be given water. Sacrificial animals that have just been delivered and have just arrived at the slaughter site, must first rest for at least 3 hours, and may not be slaughtered immediately.
