The Park District swim facilities include six open-water lakefront beaches, three chlorinated lagoons, two pools, and two bay shoreline beaches. Beginner — Participants will learn to enter chest deep water by jumping in, fully submerge and hold breath for 10 seconds, rotary breathing, front float 10 seconds, back float 15 seconds, change direction of travel while swimming on front and back, tread water for 30 seconds in shoulder-deep water, combined arm and leg actions on front for jammer 5 body lengths.

Swimmers at Contra Loma, Cull Canyon, Roberts Pool, Castle Rock pool, Don Castro, Lake Temescal, Lake Anza, and Quarry Lakes who wish to enter chest deep water, are required to wear an identifying wrist band, issued by the lifeguards. A Junior Lifeguard program is also offered at several lakes. Beach wheelchairs are available at Contra Loma in Antioch, Del Valle in Livermore, Don Castro in Castro Valley, Quarry Lakes in Fremont, Shadow Cliffs in Pleasanton, Lake Temescal in Oakland and Robert W. Crown Memorial State Beach in Alameda and Tilden’s Lake Anza in Berkeley. Swim lessons for children are offered at Contra Loma and Roberts Pool. We elected to swim down the buoy line to Fossil Point and back. Lifesavers learn to perform safe rescues in challenging emergency scenarios, providing advanced training in the lifesaving principles learned in Bronze Medallion. Rescuers will learn tows, carries, defense methods and releases in preparations for challenging rescues. You will be introduced to key principles of learning and teaching, and master basic progressions. Through classroom learning and in-water practice, this program prepares candidates to help certified instructors with swimming and lifesaving classes. This program prepares the instructor to teach and evaluate swim strokes and lifesaving skills. Candidates learn CPR and develop the lifesaving skills needed to be their own lifeguard. Participants develop problem solving and decision making skills individually and in partners. Will help to prepare participants for success in Bronze Medallion. Swimmers will build on the strokes learned previously by increasing distance. These programs are for adults and youth over the age of 12 who want to learn to swim or improve their swim strokes and technique. Alcohol, glass containers, fires, and dogs are prohibited at ALL swimming areas.
